Missouri: Show-Me State or Hypocrisy State?

Growing up in Missouri I was taught that I lived in the Show-Me state.  To me that meant we didn’t believe everything we were told and instead, we trusted what we saw with our own two eyes.  Today, I still tell people “show me don’t tell me”.

I am not sure what happened to that philosophy because based on what I am being shown by the Missouri government we are now the “Hypocrisy State” and we are believing what we are told not what we see.

Local Control

Local control is the call to action that is used when our Missouri government does not want to follow Federal laws.

The Second Amendment Preservation ACT (SAPA) says that Missourians do not have to follow federal gun laws. It also has provisions that punish Missouri law enforcement that cooperates with federal law enforcement in any federal gun cases.  So in Missouri, anyone over 18 can buy any gun, they do not have to pass a background check, and they can buy ammo at the same time. They can walk into the store empty-handed and come back out of the store fully armed and ready to kill.  SAPA also has provisions that restrict the gun laws that counties, cities, or towns can implement.

But wait, isn’t that local control?

This same state government has sued school districts over COVID-19 protocols; wants to control what is taught in public schools overruling elected school boards; controls the police force of Kansas City; and (with the help of rural voters because KC voters said NO)  just passed a law dictating how much KC has to spend on its police force.

So they are “telling me” they are all about local control but “showing me” it is about state control.

LIFE

Jumping right in here to the touchiest topic.  When Roe v. Wade was overturned in June, the following statement was in the press release from the Missouri Attorney General’s office when triggering the anti-abortion bill   “Missouri’s dedication to protecting the sanctity of life, both born and unborn”.

But, what about these lives?

  • Missouri still has the death penalty which is nothing more than state-sanctioned murder.
  • In an average year, 1,288 people die by guns.  With a rate of 21.3 deaths per 100,000 people, Missouri has the 5th-highest rate of gun deaths in the US.
  • The current law in Missouri appears to prohibit medical professionals from performing an abortion that would save a mother’s life and such a law could result in both the baby and mother dying.  The law does have a clause about medical emergencies but it is very vague and many medical professionals are hesitant to act.
    • It does not have an exception for abortion in cases of incest or rape of young girls who, although they are capable of getting pregnant, do not have mature enough bodies to carry a pregnancy to term, without damaging or killing them.
  • There were 22,038 COVID-19 deaths reported in Missouri and even stories of many COVID deaths that were not reported. Our state government spent most of the pandemic fighting against the recommendations of medical agencies and filing lawsuits.
  • There were 1,144 Missouri suicide deaths in 2022.
    • We have a severe shortage of access to mental health care! State services are handled by non-profit organizations that are contracted by the state.
    • Many of these suicide deaths were by gun and, in at least one case, the family tried to get the gun taken away from their loved one because they knew they were suicidal. However, in Missouri, anyone over 18 has the right to own a gun even with evidence of suicidal ideation or past crimes.

This is “showing me” that the state really doesn’t care about the sanctity of life, both born and unborn, those are just a collection of buzzwords used to get votes and attention.

In Closing

I could go on indefinitely because every day there is someone new in our state government who decides they are the smartest, holiest person who exists and they introduce more legislation trying to control the rights of every poor and working-class Missourian to limit their access to education, health care, and safety.

I CHOOSE TO BELIEVE THAT MOST MISSOURIANS DO NOT SUPPORT THE EXTREME POLITICS WE ARE SEEING IN MISSOURI.
