I am reposting this blog because this is important to everyone in the Kansas City area. Doing the same thing, voting in the same people and expecting something to change is just CRAZY. Let’s try different!
When I started looking for just the facts about the incumbent Jackson County Prosecutor, Jean Peters Baker and the opponent, Tracey Chappell, current Blue Springs prosecutor, I can find very few statistics that show if goals are being met. Even as I am writing this I am going back and looking to see if I just missed something.
I will start with Jean Peters Baker, she has been the Jackson County Prosecutor since 2011, and has been with the prosecutors office since she was hired by Claire McCaskill as an assistant prosecutor. What statistics I can find show that since 2011 violent crime and child abuse in Jackson county has steadily increased. Those are listed as her two top priorities and whatever she is doing is obviously not helping. The majority (90+%) of the cases “resolved” through the prosecutors office appear to be “plea agreements”. According to news reports of statements made by both sides, there is a big divide between her and the Kansas City Police department with a lot of finger pointing.
Tracey Chappell has been with the Blue Springs prosecutors office since 2018. The city prosecutors deal mostly with misdemeanors and there aren’t any stats I can find newer than 2018. So as an actual prosecutor not much to go on. What I have seen in the news and in what Tracey says about herself and her goals is that she is all about inclusiveness, she has worked at bridging the divide between the black and white communities. She understands how mental health issues and plea deals undermine the judicial system. She wants to “Work with the community and law enforcement to build bridges that deter crime and reduce recidivism.”
With all that has happened this year in Kansas City, the call for reform in our police department and in the whole system I think it is time for a change in our prosecutors office. We need someone who will work with the police departments, mayors and city prosecutors to make real change here.
We have to make a change in the way we are handling the violence in our community for our children’s sake. Children should not be taught to be afraid of the police, people should not be afraid to speak up and work with law enforcement to end the violence. We have children in our cities right here in Jackson county that are taught from a very young age to hit the floor when they hear gunshots, and to hide from the police. We have to take steps to change the status quo that is fueling the violence.
I WILL BE VOTING FOR TRACY CHAPPELL FOR JACKSON COUNTY MISSOURI PROSECUTOR.
